Canoeing, Kayaking & Rafting

Nearby Twin Lakes offers 2-hour boat rides on the highest glacial lakes in North America. Boat rentals are also available. Or, pick up the pace a bit and go whitewater rafting in the Arkansas and Colorado rivers, with expert local guides.

Leadville Safaris

Guided walking tours through historic district of Leadville are available June through September on Friday and Saturdays. The tours include Paupers Field Cemetery Stroll, Mining District, and Ghost Tours. The tours start and end at The Delaware Hotel.

Mineral Belt Trail

Walk or bike this 11.5 mile loop around Leadville, accessible 2 blocks from The Delaware Hotel. The Denver Post calls this path “one of the finest bike paths in the state.” You’ll be able to view much of Leadville’s history on his trail, such mining sites. Best of all, it’s free!


The Mt. Massive Golf Course, a 9-hole public course, is the highest in North America. Located on the outskirts of Leadville, set in the open spaces of the Arkansas River valley and surrounded by the tallest mountains in the state, it is a must do while in Leadville.

4×4 Off Road Adventures

Area trailheads abound for the off-road enthusiast. An extensive off-road area map is available at the Forest Ranger Station. Several local companies offer guided backcountry tours in Jeeps or Hummers with convertible tops. Local ATV vehicle rentals are also available.


Established in 1889, the Leadville Fish Hatchery is the second oldest federally operated fish hatchery in existence today. It’s cold, clean water provides the ideal spot for native cutthroat trout production. Ample fishing holes can be found throughout Lake County. Several local companies offer guided fishing trips with instruction and equipment.

Horseback Riding

Half Day horseback rides, full day horseback rides, and horse drawn wagon rides are just some of the options available in the area. The rides range from 2-7 hours, some going above the treeline, but no matter which ride you choose, all take you through the breathtaking countryside.


Hiking in Leadville offers views of Colorado’s tallest mountains that command the skyline. Hikes in Leadville can be short or long. It doesn’t matter as long as you’re breathing fresh mountain air. Popular day hikes include Hope Pass, made famous by the Leadville Trail 100, family-friendly Native Lake, Timberline Lake in the majestic Holy Cross Wilderness Area, and the steep, heart pumping Windsor Lake Trail. And for the more adventurous, try summiting Colorado’s highest peak- Mount Elbert.
